Mari's Quinceanera Story

Maria del Mar is turning 15 in a few months, and being that she has spanish origin, she chose her Quinceanera fiesta instead of a sweet 16. Both ideas were good for me,but this one is awesome! I had my own 15 year old party long ago and now I have the chance to plan and design her party in an era when everything is fancier and chic.
You might have guessed right ,since I'm a shoe designer...I'm all fully and deeply compromised and particularly interested in every detail that makes the perfect shoes for my own princess.
Mari has a lot of ideas,so like the pickiest bride or teen, she has a big spectrum of personal accents that she desires to portrait on her shoes,to make them unique and a keepsake to store forever.

Planning a quinceanera takes many months and is not an easy task, but if you plan your quinceanera party (like I'm doing) with plenty of time it can turn into a perfect fifteen celebration.

So where do you start? Well, planning a Sweet 16, or even if it’s a debutante, homecoming Queen, cotillion or Quinceanera Party, whatever the coming of age celebration is, it is not a difficult job anymore. And I will focus my attention today only on the shoes.

She has a theme of snowflakes (in Florida,by the end of june...teens are funny!) plus ladybugs on red tones,a turtle on the sole, her name and date on the side ..maybe the date only in numbers? She loves red,so the turtle might be red!!! and of course red tattoo roses at front with lots of bling.
Some ideas I have roughly created are:
This was actually the first intent:
And these seemed to be the first option for a pump.

Then she wanted to make some changes :
Then she saw these rough I created for other Quinceanera, and she liked the idea of the polka dots, giving them a more icy theme:
And then she liked more these peep toe:

That she saw at another shoe that created for a Bride with a lower heel:

After that I introduced a new line of very high heels with a painted aqua sole, although she was happy with a red sole, very Louboutin
Well,I said let's focus again, that is the problem with being the designer's daughter...too many options.
She saw the red soles I created for a Spanish Celebrity:

And she was sure that it was exactly want she wanted but on these sexy peep toes:

Ahhhhh I can breath now again,we are getting back on track.
Let me show you other ideas I draw for different Quinceanera themes:
For the Canadian-American Theme:

For the music lover....
For the glam girl (like me)

For the pink girl...other option for my own party!

I actually sold this design last week..isn't it super cute?

For the Cinderella Theme...and that is it,for today..I don't want to overwhelm you (or myself).

Next time,....I might show you,the finished product.

To get a closer look at her jewelry, designs and her personal life here are some insights I'd like to share with all my blog followers and friends.

Lauren said:  Though I have working on my lapisbeach line of hand knitted jewelry for over 3 years....I just started selling on Etsy last January. Many things inspired me to choose this field:  my life have driven me to the path I am on right now. For as long as I can remember, I have always created "something". I have played in many artistic fields, but every night I would pick up my knitting needles. I always had a knitting project in my lap. I feel very fortunate, as I am a Mom of twin boys to be able to do what I love while being available for them at all times.

About 4 years ago, I met two wonderful ladies from Canada at an International yarn show. They were selling kits for tubular knitted necklaces. While I loved the concept, the project took me an entire week. I had always designed my own sweater patterns, so I thought about how to design jewelry patterns and lapisbeach was born. I started with bracelets, then added rings, necklaces and even earrings. I used soft fibers and added to my bead mix collections every week. Teh i decided to include wire knits. I still try to develop new patterns and color combinations to keep the lapisbeach jewelry line fresh and unique.

One thing I love about creating my jewelry- is that I can make it almost anywhere. I live in MD (always have)...and I would say the beautiful changes of seasons does inspire some of my creations. I constantly try to add new and exciting pieces to lapisbeach. Almost all of my jewelry is one of a kind. I hand string and hand knit every single item. I string so many beads- they never line up the same way. Every piece is truly a unique piece of wearable art and that sets me apart from the multitude of jewelry designers.

I am still somewhat new to all of this selling and I still learn something new everyday but if could give some advice  I would tell people to be sure to have good communication with customers (it is so crucial in an online environment), constantly try for better photographs, and listen to advise from those who are willing to give you some.
In addition to Etsy, FB and twitter, I am fortunate enough to have a few select boutiques that now carry the lapisbeach line. They are local, and so much fun to visit! Maybe one day, I will also have a few boutiques that are out of state.
She is  currently in the process of designing some wire knit pendants to coordinate with her wire works line. She also has a terrible addiction to beads-  always working on new color choices for her clients.

How do you see  Lauren in 5 years? She replied: I truly hope to still be fortunate enough to be creating what I love. I would love to evolve and create a couture line of lapisbeach with precious metals. I would also like to have a lapisbeach "following" & help new sellers with knowledge that I have gained with 5 years experience.
I love what I do. I love what I make, and it gives me a thrill to sell worldwide on Etsy. To think of a total stranger... seeing my jewelry, purchasing it...and wearing my creation somewhere in the world...priceless!

WEARABLE ART

Wearable art, also known as Artwear or "art to wear", refers to individually designed pieces of (usually) hand-made clothing or jewelry created as fine or expressive art. While the making of any article of clothing or other wearable object typically involves aesthetic considerations, the term wearable art implies that the work is intended to be accepted as a serious and unique artistic creation or statement. Pieces may be sold and/or exhibited. The modern idea of wearable art seems to have surfaced more than once in various forms. Marbeth Schon's book on modernist jewelry (see the section on jewelry below) refers to a "wearable art movement" spanning roughly the years 1930 to 1960. A 2003 New York Times review of a book on knitting refers to "the 60s Art to Wear movement". [1]

Most wearable art is made of fibrous materials and constitutes therefore a branch of the wider field of fiber art, which includes both wearable and non-wearable forms of art using fabric and other fiber products. Wearable art as an artistic domain can also of course include jewelry, or clothing made from non-fiber materials such as leather, plastic sheeting, metals, etc.

Definition by wikipedia....what is your definition? Are you an art lover? Do you dare to wear art as fashion? Leave your comment.

Green is the new black and old vs. new

All over the fashion world, people are saying, “green is the new black.”

On the streets of Toronto a new kind of It girlis in town - and you won’t find her in Holt Renfrew. She is the recessionista - the thrifty woman with a killer sense of style.

With the global movement to “go green” in full swing, with everything from Earth Hour, to organic produce, it was only a matter of time before the fashion industry followed suit.

Major brand names like, H&M, as well as designers like Katherine Hamnett, are taking a step into living harmoniously with the hip, tree-huggers of the world, with their snazzy, new, green threads.

According to Katherine Hamnett’s website, organic cotton – one aspect of eco-friendly clothing – is cotton grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers in soil that has been chemical-free for at least the last three years. Besides being pesticide-free, organic cotton can also help farmers get as much as a 50% increase in their income, as it costs less to produce than conventional cotton, which is responsible for using 25% of the world’s pesticides.

“The difference is ethical. By choosing organic cotton t-shirts you’ll feel how soft, stylish and luxurious they are. More importantly, you’ll help change thousands of lives for the better,” said Hamnett on her site.

“I will always try to pick the organic over the regular product, even though the price difference can sometimes be silly. I know no pesticides were used on it, and that helps me sleep better at night,” said Holly Jackson, who is in charge of a sustainability committee at the University of Maryland. “I think if people knew the bad effects of pesticides, they’d be a lot more inclined to pay the extra dollar for an organic item.”

The idea of ‘green living’ attached to organic clothing is supposed to be a key feature that should appeal to most fashion-conscious folks. However, with an average price of about $110.00 to let designers like Hamnett bring a little more ‘green’ to your closet, it’s no wonder the trend of the recessionista which is sweeping the city like your new, organic blush brush has come out to show us all how to look like a million bucks without actually spending that much. Amanda Reyes, a second-year arts and contemporary student at Ryerson Universityprefers the path of the recessionista over what she says is the sometimes, “expensive and sketchy,” ways of organic clothing in mainstream brands. Reyes uses the scandal surrounding Lululemon and their “seaweed t-shirts.”

In November, last year, a front-page expose in The New York Timesreported that its independent testing laboratory didn’t detect any seaweed in a randomly selected ‘VitaSea’ Lululemon T-shirt. “Personally, I would rather go to Value Village, CTS, or Black Market, and pay six bucks for a really cool, vintage-y blouse – as opposed to paying a ridiculous amount of money for a plain t-shirt,” said Reyes. “And besides, who wants seaweed in their clothing?”

At H&M, organic cotton t-shirts costs about twice as much as a regular t-shirts. This is why Brittany Schein from Oklahoma City, Okla. thinks that the ‘green movement’ is nothing more than a carefully-crafted marketing scheme. “Caring about the environment is the trend right now. They know that if people see a regular shirt versus an organic one, they will buy it – even if it is a little more expensive,” said Schein.

Nina B, a student from Boston, Mass. said, “I have one ‘organic cotton’ dress from H&M, but I would have bought it if it was regular cotton. The fact that it had a special tag didn’t influence my decision to buy it.”

Another online magazine that has set its sights on creating a greener closet for us all is treehugger.com, a website that “sympathizes with the fact that most people aren’t willing to compromise their current lifestyle in order to improve our shared environment,” and understands that by living green through “education and action … you don’t need to run off to live with the wolves to contribute to the betterment of Mother Nature.“

Though it may be true that most of us aren’t looking through Craigslistfor a new, howling roommate, it may just be a little unfair to say that we won’t budge to save our planet. The movement of the recessionista takes on a ‘Fashion without victim’ approach – one shared by Katherine Hamnett, only with a lower price tag.

“I do think that it’s [thrifting and buying vintage] exponentially more ‘green’ than ‘organic’ garments. Producing more clothing still uses more resources – even if some are ‘organic,’ still pollutes,” said Nina B. “To me, it just seems like a way for people to spend money and then pat themselves on the back for being ‘green.’”

Even some firm believers in the ‘green movement’ remain cautious when it comes to buying into ‘buying green.’ Jackson said, “A lot of brands ‘greenwash’ people now. By making an item seem environmentally friendly, when really, they only care about the profit.”

In the battle between seemingly eco-friendly corporations and savvy recessionistas, it is unclear which side is “greener” (pun most definitely intended). For one, buying more things – even if they are organic – isn’t necessarily ‘green,’ as valuable resources are still being used up. And, although it would appear that refraining from over-consumption of brand-new, fabulous threads is significantly greener, some used, vintage items like real fur and leather don’t exactly spread feelings of ‘eco-love’ to some of the Earth’s creatures.

So, just some friendly advice from one self-proclaimed ‘couture connoisseur’ to another – go ahead, shop new and organic, or shop vintage. Just remember to stay informed, stay thrifty, stay stylish, and try not to get caught up in all of the corporate hype. The choice is always yours.
